6: Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact
OH SHIT, GANG GANG! Yeah, thats probably one of my favourite quotes from a song ever, from the ever pleasing ‘Tinchy Stryder’ in GGD’s ‘Princes’. I love Gang Gang dance, and I loved them even more when I heard ‘Eye Contact’, suddenly their tracks formed something of a cohesive album rather than a collection of oddball songs. Because that’s what they are essentially, a collection of oddball people combining oddball sounds (eastern european like singing, african guitar riffs and synth freak-outs) to create, well, odd music. Eye contact really hones in on a particular sound, and Gang Gang dance to live up to their name; music to dance to. They do this in a way that is true to their ideals though, with a rich experimentation with sound (the opener, and one of my favourite songs this year, spends about 10 minutes building up) and an ability to craft catchy and dancey tunes amongst a mindfuck blend of a hundred sounds. They have an energy that is really crafted in the album, and in their live sets, and have a sound of a band playing together and bouncing off each other, as opposed to a highly orchestrated and rigid composition by a lone producer. If anything, Eye Contact leave you scratching your head whilst grinning like a moron and tapping your feet.
